“The future depends on what you do today.”
(Gandhi)

While FinDotNews was only founded in 2020, this year is a milestone for our overarching brand DotNews, which celebrates 20 years in October. That’s 20 years of helping professional firms in South Africa to connect meaningfully with their clients through high-quality newsletters integrated with a full range of marketing services. From law firms and accounting practices to financial advisory firms, we have grown together, always adapting to the latest technology and marketing practices so you stay ahead.

Our journey: how DotNews got started

Back in 2005, smaller law firms were being outgunned by the big ones. They had fancy marketing departments, deep pockets, and the luxury of time. In those “dinosaur days”, monthly client newsletters were resource-hungry: written, printed, and posted at great expense. Smaller firms lacked the time, expertise, and resources to compete. That’s when LawDotNews was born — doing everything electronically (cutting-edge for the time), just as effectively but at a fraction of the cost. Our maiden issue launched in October 2005, a text-only email almost unrecognisable from the beautifully designed, web-based newsletters we produce today.

Since then, we have expanded: AccountingDotNews, FinDotNews, our service offerings, our content, design and technology – all have evolved. But our original promise remains: We make a full range of professional marketing services, accessible, affordable, and effective for firms of all sizes.

Why newsletters are at the heart of our marketing services

Newsletters have always underpinned our service offerings. Why?

In these days of increased competition, staying connected with all your clients and potential new clients is vital for success

Monthly newsletters are the perfect tool, keeping you top-of-mind always with your target market through quality, engaging content

DotNews newsletters remain accessible to firms of all sizes and to all marketing budgets – no one need sit on the sidelines watching as their competition eats into their market share!

We do everything for you so you can concentrate your efforts on servicing your clients’ needs.

Put our newsletters at the core of your marketing plan. They’re effortless, budget-friendly and highly effective.

What we’ve achieved in 20 years

Here are just a few of the markers that show how far we’ve come:

Milestone

What It Means

Over the years we’ve been trusted by hundreds of law, accounting & financial advisory firms

Proof of long-term relationships built on trust and value delivered.

Newsletter services across three professions: LawDotNews, AccountingDotNews & FinDotNews

Each tailored to the particular needs of legal practices, accountants, and financial advisors.

Constant innovation: Our original text-only email has given way over the years to web-based templates, automation, and now the latest in AI tools

We embrace change so our clients remain at the cutting edge in a fast-changing environment.

New service offerings: Blog management, website design, social media management, email branding, and other tailored solutions

As the digital world evolves, so too do the needs of our clients. What began as a newsletter service has grown into a comprehensive marketing partner – a one-stop solution for all your communication and branding needs.

Keeping your client communication & trust at centre stage

Client retention, client acquisition, regular engagement, and maximised reputation matter more than ever.

Looking forward: the future is powered by AI, clients & content

The marketing world for professional services is changing fast. AI-tools are now part of the conversation. Client communication channels are multiplying. Expectations for relevance, speed, and customisation are higher than ever. At DotNews, our goal over the next 20 years is simple: keep innovating, keep helping you meet your clients where they are, with content that builds trust, clarity, and impact.

How DotNews can help you

If you are looking for:

A newsletter service provider who understands professional firm marketing – law firm marketing, accountant marketing, and financial advisor marketing

A partner who can do everything for you – the writing, design, strategy, and delivery — freeing you to focus on what you do best

A team that has been doing this since before “digital newsletters” were the “big new thing”

Then DotNews is ready when you are.

Here’s to the next 20!

Thank you to all our clients, partners, team members, past and present, for being part of this exciting journey. Let’s make the next 20 years even more remarkable.

If you run a professional firm (law, accounting, or financial advisory) and want to elevate your client communication, grow your brand, or simply engage more meaningfully with your clients, reach out to us at DotNews. Let’s talk newsletters, content strategy, and how to stay ahead in a noisy digital world.

FinDotNews, a leader in automated client communication for financial advisors, has partnered with Synergia Learning, South Africa’s premier training platform for aspiring Certified Financial Planners and Fiduciary specialists. The partnership aims to modernize and enhance the learning experience for financial professionals through easily digestible, high-quality content.

FinDotNews has built a strong reputation for its ready-to-use, compliance-friendly articles that help financial advisors educate and retain their clients. Now, this rich library of professional content will be made available to Synergia Learning’s student community.

“The days of poring over complex, outdated textbooks are behind us,” said Carmen Venter, Director at Synergia Learning. “Our students are hungry for concise, practical material to apply and discuss in real-time. FinDotNews delivers exactly that.”

The nitty gritty

This content-sharing initiative will give Synergia learners access to expertly written articles on relevant topics such as retirement planning, fiduciary responsibilities, investment strategies, and more. These articles will serve as springboards for discussion, creating a more interactive and collaborative learning environment.

“Through this partnership, we’re not just providing content – we’re fuelling conversation, curiosity, and career growth,” said Paddy Crook, Managing Director of FinDotNews. “By aligning with Synergia, we’re contributing to the development of the financial leaders of tomorrow.”

Onwards and upwards

As the financial services industry evolves, FinDotNews and Synergia Learning are showing their willingness to embrace the future wholeheartedly. “We’ve always been about leveraging the power of technology to make financial marketing easier,” says Paddy Crook. “When we work with established practices this often involves overhauling existing systems, so it’s really exciting to work with professionals who are just getting going.”

For financial advisors, starting out with an automated marketing solution can save a lot of time and hassle down the road. Instead of patching automation into an existing strategy, you’re building a solid, streamlined system right from the get-go. That means your emails, social posts, and client touchpoints are consistent, professional, and running on autopilot while you focus on what you do best: serving your clients.

“It’s great to have found a likeminded partner in FinDotNews,” says Carmen Venter. “As an entirely independent training provider I’m not obliged to use content from any particular university or professional body. Instead, I can choose the best of the best.”

About Synergia Learning

Synergia Learning is all about assisting financial and fiduciary planners to obtain the knowledge and skills required to comfortably navigate the most complex financial management strategies. Established by Carmen Venter in 2009, Synergia Learning has become South Africa’s leading independent trainer for aspiring CFP® and FPSA® professionals. The firm also offers accredited CPD training.

It’s an age-old business conundrum that’s especially applicable for financial planners. You need a marketing plan to grow your business… But you don’t have the time or money to implement said plan. An automated – yet customisable – marketing solution might be the answer to your woes.

Email is still king

Despite the rise of LinkedIn marketing and video clips, email marketing still offers the best ROI of all online marketing tools.

The challenge for financial services professionals is to create content that stands out. Content that is scrupulously researched, elegantly written, relevant to your audience … And entertaining to read.

Consistency is also key. For content marketing to really work, you need to be communicating with clients and prospectives on a monthly basis.

The problem

Penning a monthly newsletter that’s packed with relevant content is time-consuming and writing might not be your forte. You could contract a boutique financial services marketing agency to do it – but the costs will soon add up.

The solution

In recent years a couple of automated marketing solutions have become available to South African financial planners. By scaling the process of writing, designing and distributing the production of client newsletters these disruptors have been able to significantly reduce costs for their customers – sometimes as much as tenfold.!

While the exact process differs slightly from firm to firm the basic concept remains the same. The marketing company pays professional writers to write content that is accurate, entertaining and relevant to the prevailing economic climate in South Africa. Right now, for example, an article about how to respond to a bear market would be especially useful for many investors.

In addition to procuring professionally written articles, the marketing provider also designs email templates for each customer: these will typically include your company logo and contact details and be designed according to your preferred colour palette. And they use bulk mailing technology to email them to your subscriber list (while taking care of all POPIA requirements).

What’s the catch?

Done right, there is no catch. But, of course, things can go wrong. One common pitfall is that the articles aren’t up to scratch. Either due to the calibre of the writing or because the financial content lacks depth.

Another frequent gripe with some automated solutions is that every advisor who signs up for the service sends exactly the same client newsletter every month. This is why it’s vital that you choose a provider who allows you to customise your newsletters – either with your own bespoke content or with articles from the provider’s library (or a combo of both).

The bottom line

Signing up for an automated marketing solution can be a real game-changer for a financial planning practice. For less than the price of a meal for two, you can send an informative and entertaining monthly update to all of your current and prospective clients. Financial planning is all about relationships and sending a high-quality monthly newsletter is a fantastic way of fostering these.

Last year, Kim Kardashian paid more than $1 000 000 to settle a case with the US financial regulator. She promoted Crypto on Instagram without disclosing that she had been paid $250 000.

The law in the US states that anyone who has been paid to promote any kind of crypto must be clear about who has paid them and how much. And the regulator took Kardashian to task for not doing so.

While this was a particularly high-profile case, it is far from the only example of celebrities or influencers promoting crypto on social media. And a new study conducted by researchers from four US universities has revealed how seriously investors should take the warning from the SEC that this “advice” should be treated with great caution.

Negative returns

The researchers looked at what happened to the prices of crypto tokens promoted by prominent social media influencers. It analysed 36 000 tweets by 180 individuals, mentioning over 1 600 different cryptocurrencies.

“Our primary results indicate that crypto influencers’ tweets are initially associated with positive returns,” the researchers found. “However, these tweets are followed by significant negative long-horizon returns, suggesting that such recommendations generate minimal long-term investment value.”

The study found that, on average, a tweet from a prominent person was followed by a 1.83% gain in the price of the crypto they mentioned on the first day. But, within just three months, those same tokens showed an average loss of 19%.

So while there was a short-term positive for those who followed crypto advice on social media, those gains were quickly and heavily eroded.

Be warned

The findings raise concerns that many people promoting crypto on social media might only be serving their own interests. They know the price is likely to go up immediately after their tweet. That gives them a chance to sell out at a profit while others are still willing to buy and then move on to something else.

This has serious implications for those following this advice, particularly since many “experts” promote lesser-known tokens that are much harder to sell than something like Bitcoin. Once the prices of these cryptos start going down, people can find it hard to get out. And that means they are locked into making losses.

This is one of the risks in crypto that many people don’t consider. When there is positive sentiment and prices are going up, people don’t worry about whether they will be able to sell out.

But when prices start falling and the mood changes, many people find that they can’t sell even if they wanted to. And in cases where the price goes to zero – which has happened a number of times – these people are left with completely worthless cryptocurrencies.

Buy, buy, buy

This also raises the second concern about advice from social media influencers regarding crypto.

Of all the tweets that the study covered, 85% were positive and encouraged people to buy. Only 15% were negative.

“No one is telling you when to get out,” the researchers pointed out.

This must raise questions about how impartial those promoting crypto on social media are. If they only encourage their followers to buy without helping them understand that a sound investment approach also includes knowing when to sell at the right price, then their advice is certainly questionable.

This is why Kim Kardashian’s run-in with the regulator is not just a piece of celebrity gossip. It should warn investors that they should treat these social media influencers with much more caution when deciding what to do with their money.

To discuss your investment options, speak to a professional

He’s involved in just about every aspect of the business and he’s hiked to Everest Base Camp. His secret? Mom’s tuna mac and cheese…

1. What do you do for FinDotNews?

I do everything from consulting with existing and potential clients and making sure Financial Planners get the best possible marketing solution for their needs, through to working with our developers to ensure our custom-built software and newsletter platform are functioning at their best. As Managing Director of DotNews, I also oversee the business as a whole, identify and develop new market opportunities, and form strategic partnerships with key industry players – all helping us get the word out to Financial Advisors about our great service.

2. How has the business evolved since you joined in 2015?

Back then, we were very much focused on only the newsletter service, and the level of customisation we could offer was quite limited. Now, not only do we have a newsletter system that allows full content customisation while still keeping our great price point, but we’ve expanded into so many new areas. We’ve grown into a full-service digital marketing agency offering website development, content management, social media management, and more.

3. Tell us something no-one knows about you.

One of my stranger quirks is that I suffer from a condition called “sidonglobophobia” – the fear of cotton wool being torn apart. I can’t stand it! Something about the way it feels and sounds makes my mouth go dry and makes me itch just thinking about it… I’ve got no idea why it affects me so much, and everyone I’ve told about it just laughs – but it’s a real thing. Look it up!!

4. What’s your best holiday ever?

Over the past few years, my cousin and I have made it a tradition to do an annual multi-day hike. This year, we’re taking on the 5-day Fish River Canyon hike. In previous years, we’ve done the Drakensberg Northern Traverse, the Leopard Trail, and in 2023, we went to Nepal and trekked to Everest Base Camp – a 12-day hike up to 5,364 metres above sea level in sub-zero temperatures. It might not have been the most comfortable holiday ever, but definitely the most adventurous so far!

5. What’s the best financial advice you’ve ever received?

When I first started investing, the idea of ignoring short-term market noise and focusing on the long term really stuck with me. That, and always working off a budget – knowing what you should spend on what, so that even if you go over, you’re aware of it – has helped me in pretty much every financial decision I’ve made.

6. What’s your favourite meal?

Mum’s tuna mac and cheese – it’s basically what I was raised on!

Jack founded DotNews way back in 2005, and he’s now Reader #1 of every issue of FinDotNews. Just don’t ask him to change a plug…

1. Tell us a bit about how DotNews started?

Back in 2005, smaller law firms were being outgunned by the big guys with their fancy marketing departments and deep pockets. In those dinosaur days, monthly newsletters were time and resource hungry, being written, printed and posted at great expense. The little guys just didn’t have the time, expertise, or financial resources to compete. That’s where the idea of LawDotNews was born – we would do everything for them electronically (cutting-edge stuff back then), just as effectively but at a fraction of the cost. We launched with our maiden issue in October 2005 – a text only email that’s unrecognisable from the fancy web-based newsletters we produce today.

2. What do you do for FinDotNews?

I help Linda and Nick choose article topics, then I “stress test” the finished articles by asking myself what a lay reader like me would want from my own financial advisor’s newsletter. Our authors do such brilliant work that I personally get huge benefit from their articles, so my job is easy!

3. Tell us something no-one knows about you.

Yikes, what a question … One thing I don’t share with too many people is that the manly art of DIY is not one of my core strengths. Only my wife and kids know all about my total inability to wield any form of tool. And now the whole of the internet, too…

4. What’s on your bookshelf at the moment?

A lot, I love reading when I get the chance. Currently I’m tag-teaming between Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Alien Clay (brilliant new sci-fi), Denys Reitz’s Commando (been on my reading list for decades, very chuffed I finally got to it) and The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo (no idea how to describe that one, you’ll have to look it up – but highly, highly recommended).

5. What’s your best holiday ever?

Plett with my family, every time. Warm sea, bodysurfing, chops on the braai and red wine calling its siren call. All with sunset views over Lookout Lagoon as a backdrop. Perfect.

Jack and his wife Jeannie on a hike at Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay

6. What’s the best financial advice you’ve ever received?

Invest long-term. Don’t ever panic over short-term shocks or be distracted by “the latest thing”.

A qualified CFP® with decades of experience leading marketing campaigns, Linda is a pioneer of specialist financial marketing in South Africa.

1. What do you do for FinDotNews?

I’m a partner and author of two of the four articles for our monthly newsletter for financial planners’ clients. I drive the business’s sales and am happily in the process of scaling it.

2. What’s on your bookshelf?

I’m currently reading Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. I recently moved home and discovered three copies in my collection. It was one of the English textbooks of my youth and of both of my children.

The themes of racial injustice, social inequity, moral courage and empathy, and Scout Finch’s coming of age are still relevant today. And it’s undoubtedly very beautifully written.

3. Tell us something that not many people know about you.

When I launched FinCommunications in 2017, a specialist financial marketing business, Kim Frost invited me to interview 13 of the top financial advisors in South Africa. It was an incredible opportunity because it allowed me to meet these top achievers and because I learned valuable lessons about self-reflection, overcoming hardship, and planning for the future.

The book is named The Good, the Great, and the Intrepid, and the top financial advisors share their stories. Unfortunately, it was published when Covid hit South Africa, and there wasn’t much of a splash in the media.

4. What do you do to relax?

I like to unwind most by swimming, whether in the gym, rock pools, or the sea, anywhere in the world. I also love art, movies, and theatre.

5. What’s your favourite travel memory?

It’s hard to answer this question, as I have many great travel memories! Probably the best trips I’ve taken are those with my adult children, most recently to Portugal, Czechoslovakia and the UK.

6. What’s the best financial advice you’ve ever received?

“Don’t rely on your inheritance for your retirement.”

A basic understanding of the latest developments in neuroscience can take your financial marketing results from mediocre to magnifico. Recent research which reveals how the human brain processes information and how we settle on a purchase is a game-changer.

Over the course of millions of years, our brains have been programmed and reprogrammed with one goal in mind: survival. This is why, when faced with a difficult choice, we tend to take the path of least resistance to save energy. It’s the same reason our brains activate the flight-or-fight response when we feel threatened.

Of course, cognitive programming isn’t all about life and death situations. Here are some tips on how to use the latest developments in neuroscience to your advantage in financial marketing.

1. Harness mental shortcuts

We are all faced with an enormous array of choices every single day — from what to have for breakfast and what shoes to put on, to what route to take on our way home. All this mental toil gets exhausting, which is why most of us make use of mental shortcuts to conserve energy and act efficiently.

Leveraging such mental shortcuts can drastically increase response rates to your marketing communication. One great example of an effective marketing shortcut is a client testimonial. Readers respond overwhelmingly positively to this kind of content as it allows them to lean on the decisions made by a trusted person. This is especially important in financial marketing because our industry is still tainted with a bad image. Testimonials provide irrefutable proof that the service is good, so be brave and ask clients for testimonials that you can use on the home page of your website.

2. Use power words in your headlines

Three words, in particular, have been proven to increase the response to marketing communication:

The word NEW elicits an involuntary positive response as we all tend to value things that are scarce. Make a point of referring to anything that is new in your business, be it new technology, new processes or newly-qualified staff.

We are all essentially egotistic by nature and the word YOU reminds us of ourselves. So instead of saying ‘We are highly-qualified advisers’, say ‘You’ll be served by highly-qualified advisers.’

Because our brains are intrinsically attracted to things that require minimal effort, the word FREE has an enormous psychological impact. You must have a good reason to give something away, though, as using the word ‘free’ recklessly can undermine your service. Making your first consultation free, for example, is a good way of snaring new clients.

3. Embrace emotion

Emotions are essential to effective financial marketing…Far more so than fancy graphs and stellar investment returns, if we’re honest. When you present your brand with feeling, you appeal to the subconscious mind of your customer; the place where 90% of all decisions are made. Just think of Allan Gray’s TV advertising: by tapping into human truths, it connects with audiences on a deeply emotional level (while also demonstrating sound investment principles, of course).

4. Show don’t tell

People respond far more strongly to images than they do to words. Sight is one of the first senses that we develop as babies and even in adulthood, human beings process images an amazing 60 thousand times faster than text! If this doesn’t convince you to pepper your marketing content with attractive visuals, then nothing will…

Colour is also a powerful tool in your branding decisions. Neuroscience has shown blue and grey to be the best hues for conveying professionalism. But we can’t all have blue and grey logos, can we? Introducing a secondary ‘happy colour’ is a good way of differentiating from your competitors. It’s no coincidence that the tick in the Ernst and Young logo is bright yellow, the colour of sunshine…

5. Let the dopamine flow

The most successful marketing campaigns are those that stimulate the production of dopamine – the chemical released during pleasurable situations. This is why humour has proved to be far more successful in insurance adverts than themes of fear or loss.

Familiarity also gets dopamine going, which is why your brand should be consistent across all media. Your aim should be to produce content that feels familiar in terms of font, images, graphics, and colours. If you haven’t already done so, get yourself a brand manual.

In recent years, gamification has shown itself to be a fantastic way of sending dopamine levels through the roof, thus presenting digital marketers with a whole new set of tools. Savvy gamification can assist in a veritable smorgasbord of marketing objectives, including raising awareness, teaching new behaviours and driving brand loyalty. Discovery has now very successfully incorporated a ‘Play the Game’ function into their website which allows users to convert points earned into rewards. Playing the game creates an element of suspense…with the safety net of knowing that you will win something!

Science has proved that targeted neurological stimulation can help marketers to achieve their goals. Every issue of FinDotNews is crafted by expert writers who understand how to leverage neuroscience to create compelling narratives that will resonate with readers.

Many advisors overlook the importance of adequately thanking clients for referrals. While some may respectfully gesture their thanks through a quick email, only a select group truly goes the extra mile to express their appreciation. These excellent advisers understand the value of doing the right thing and show clients how much they genuinely appreciate the introduction.

A story that shows the power of effort

Imagine a financial advisor with a client who wants to grow their commercial property portfolio. The client had multiple commercial properties in mind, but the financial details of real estate investments demanded a more thorough approach. Rather than leaning on cookie-cutter strategies, the financial planner chose a tailored path.

The advisor went beyond the standard playbook, accurately evaluating each property with a sharp focus on market trends. The advisor delivered a thorough custom report with detailed cash flow projections, tax-saving strategies, and creative financing options for each potential purchase.

This personalised approach struck a chord. The client was impressed by the depth of care and the planner’s genuine commitment to their success. By investing extra time and effort into crafting a personalised plan, the financial planner helped the client make smarter investment decisions, in the process building a relationship based on trust.

Effort equals excellence

Here’s what we recommend instead of a quick email or phone call to thank a client for a referral:

Post a quality handwritten card which genuinely demonstrates the value of the introduction

If the referral is a potential high net-worth client, you could send the existing client a personalised gift, such as a bottle of Scotch or a bunch of flowers.

The more personalised the card or gift, the more it will reflect your appreciation.

On a side note, larger advisory firms should draft a gift-giving policy with a monetary threshold above which a gift would not be acceptable.

Further reflection on gifting

A tremendous gifting strategy is to align annual reviews with clients’ birthdays. You can give your clients birthday cards and perhaps gifts and thank them once again for the referrals they have made.

Mastering the art of client referrals

Of course, the overall strategy to gain additional referrals requires more. It would be best to focus on educating your clients, who may share valuable content with potential clients.
