6 Questions with Paddy

He’s involved in just about every aspect of the business and he’s hiked to Everest Base Camp. His secret? Mom’s tuna mac and cheese…

1. What do you do for FinDotNews?

I do everything from consulting with existing and potential clients and making sure Financial Planners get the best possible marketing solution for their needs, through to working with our developers to ensure our custom-built software and newsletter platform are functioning at their best. As Managing Director of DotNews, I also oversee the business as a whole, identify and develop new market opportunities, and form strategic partnerships with key industry players – all helping us get the word out to Financial Advisors about our great service.

2. How has the business evolved since you joined in 2015?

Back then, we were very much focused on only the newsletter service, and the level of customisation we could offer was quite limited. Now, not only do we have a newsletter system that allows full content customisation while still keeping our great price point, but we’ve expanded into so many new areas. We’ve grown into a full-service digital marketing agency offering website development, content management, social media management, and more.

3. Tell us something no-one knows about you.

One of my stranger quirks is that I suffer from a condition called “sidonglobophobia” – the fear of cotton wool being torn apart. I can’t stand it! Something about the way it feels and sounds makes my mouth go dry and makes me itch just thinking about it… I’ve got no idea why it affects me so much, and everyone I’ve told about it just laughs – but it’s a real thing. Look it up!!

4. What’s your best holiday ever?

Over the past few years, my cousin and I have made it a tradition to do an annual multi-day hike. This year, we’re taking on the 5-day Fish River Canyon hike. In previous years, we’ve done the Drakensberg Northern Traverse, the Leopard Trail, and in 2023, we went to Nepal and trekked to Everest Base Camp – a 12-day hike up to 5,364 metres above sea level in sub-zero temperatures. It might not have been the most comfortable holiday ever, but definitely the most adventurous so far!

5. What’s the best financial advice you’ve ever received?

When I first started investing, the idea of ignoring short-term market noise and focusing on the long term really stuck with me. That, and always working off a budget – knowing what you should spend on what, so that even if you go over, you’re aware of it – has helped me in pretty much every financial decision I’ve made.

6. What’s your favourite meal?

Mum’s tuna mac and cheese – it’s basically what I was raised on!
